A Day In The Life Of A Social Media Manager


We sat down with the talented Tess Vuurman, Social Media Strategist at The Digital Picnic, to chat about her journey into social media, her advice to young career go-getters and to take a glimpse into the life of a Social Media Superstar!


Q: Tess, how long have you worked in social media for?

A: It’s been four years now!  


Q: What attracted you to the social media industry? What do you love most about it?

A: What I love about social media is that it allows me to be super creative, but I also love the strategic side of it too. I love that with social media, you can put a number on it! I can go and look at statistics and tell my clients exactly how many people their ad has reached and how many impressions and conversions it has generated– the numbers don’t lie!
I also love that anyone can do it, it’s the golden age for small businesses! It’s such a great platform to build up your brand, make great connections, entertain people and build amazing communities! I love being part of that.


Q: What does a typical work day look like for you?

A: Ooh that’s a hard one, my days are very different! I usually try and keep up to date with the news each morning because everything is always changing, and I try to keep up with new trends. We have a group chat at work where we share important articles and updates, so that we can all stay in-the-know and share these changes with our clients.

A typical day for me involves creating social media strategies, producing content, facilitating photoshoots and sometimes dealing with crisis management if needed! I do a lot of social media training and one-on-one sessions with clients, I love teaching people and empowering other people to run their own social media!


Q: Do you have a favourite social media outlet?

A: That’s really hard! I definitely spend more time on Instagram, but I feel like Facebook is a very undervalued platform for businesses. Lots of businesses don’t like Facebook, but this is because they don’t realise all the features that it offers and all the benefits it can have to brands if it’s used properly! Facebook is always adding lots of functions for businesses to grow their brands, and I love that!

I do love Instagram as well, and I particularly love REAL things on Instagram! By real, I mean that I prefer watching Instagram stories rather than scrolling through the feed. I love the human element of Instagram stories, and the story behind it.       


 Q: What are your favourite types of projects to work on?

A: I love projects that involve small businesses! I’m very passionate about helping small businesses and I love seeing the impact that social media can have on them! I’m also passionate about influencer marketing, I find a lot of people don’t know how to do influencer marking properly, but when it’s done right, it can be so powerful!

I also like working with non-for profits, because I love helping others and find it very rewarding.  


 Q: What do you think makes a great Social Media Manager?

A: I think you need to be really passionate about what you do and be willing to go the extra mile, because let’s face it, social media is 24/7 (but it’s also important not to let it rule your life!). You need to be curious and always willing to learn and upskill yourself, as the industry is constantly changing and there’s always different trends! I think you need a healthy balance of being creative and strategic, as well as having a curiosity for numbers!


 Q: As a senior manager, what qualities do you look for in an intern or junior coordinator?  

A: I always look for someone who is taking notes when I teach them, because it shows that they’re learning and I like someone who is curious and wants to learn. I look for someone who takes initiative and is always asking questions such as “Can you tell me what you’re doing?” or, “I can see that you’re really busy right now, is there anything I can do to help you?”, that for me is what makes a great intern.

*Sorry, I just need to step out to take this work call! You see, even though it’s a Saturday social media is 24/7!


Q: What advice can you give to aspiring social media managers?

A: I would say, follow lots of social media news! Read up on the latest trends and upskill yourself outside of University. Do as many internships as possible, you learn so much by doing! Build your skills and experience by signing yourself up to a social media workshop (we offer them at The Digital Picnic!). I’m always so impressed when I see interns who have gone that extra mile and are upskilling themselves!

When you’re looking for an internship, It’s always good to look for an agency who offers training and gives you the opportunity to shadow someone, so you can learn from them. It’s also important to know that even if you’re an intern, you’re valuable and everything you do has helped the business and contributed to a happy client! 


 Q: What’s the best thing about your job? 

A: I get to do something that I love! I’m so lucky that I can get up out of bed every morning and feel excited to go to work and do something that I’m passionate about!
